GFE x SFMOMA: Nature’s Knowledge
As part of the (truly wondrously incredible, please go see it if you can!!) Ruth Asawa Retrospective, SFMoMA teamed up with Garden for the Environment to do a pop up on a patio adjacent to the gallery, to complement Ruth’s dedication to her own garden and the powerful role of nature in her work and life. We put together a zine with garden info, along with drawing and writing prompts.

Celebrate community, creativity, and collective growth with Garden for the Environment.
Garden for the Environment (GFE) is San Francisco’s public teaching garden. From their vibrant half-acre in the Inner Sunset, they teach about the environment — soil, water, plants, creatures, and climate — so together we can grow a resilient, more beautiful world.
On this First Thursday, GFE invites visitors at SFMoMA to:
Learn about urban nature and dig in!
From hands-on compost demos (worms and all!), to ‘Ask a Gardener’ stations, to actionable info about our native ecosystems, this is a night to reap new perspectives on how to support our world, and each other.
Connect with local orgs and get involved!
GFE partners with over 40 Bay Area organizations: city departments, local universities, community gardens and urban forests, neighborhood groups, and more. Meet the folks making it all happen, and find your volunteer niche (or career pivot!).
Draw, write, and create and share your work!
Make yourself comfortable at our communal art table; pick a medium (crayons to collage, pens to pencils); get inspired by the remarkable flora and fauna found in the diverse gardens of San Francisco; and nurture your imagination. Visitors will also be invited to contribute to a communal art project that will be installed at GFE.
About GFE:
Since 1990,Garden for the Environment(GFE) has served as San Francisco’s only public teaching and education garden and dynamiccommunitythird space. Located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone people, this one-half acre garden is now public land managed by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Nearly 3,000 children and adults learn with us annually through twice-weeklyvolunteer days,weekend workshops,school field trips, and our renowned three-month Gardening and Composting Educator training program (Get Up!). GFE is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year. Everyone is welcome to visit and observe our plants, find a seat to enjoy the surroundings, and take our self-guided tour.

Celebrate long days and new growth with the Ortega Seed Library crew and a bunch of other plant folks. All ages and gardening levels very welcome!
Spring Wreathmaking and Flower Crafting
Join us for a springtime walk through Garden for the Environment to gather beautiful seasonal flowers and greens that you will use to create a spring wreath or vibrant garden swag to take home with you! Part exploration and part creativity, you'll gain skills to create your own natural pieces for your home in every season.
Flowers and Foliage, Prints and Presses: A Hands-On Creative Workshop
Join garden educators Carey Craddock and Jordan Kushins for a creative morning getting hands-on with nature and making one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Together we’ll tour the Botanical Garden for inspiration, then make colorful prints with fresh and dried leaves and flowers, and a whole lot of colorful paint; all attendees will also put together a portable press to collect and preserve plants for future projects. Leave this hands-on session full of fresh ideas, with gifts to give or keep!
Ortega Seed Library Launch + Swap!
Join us the weekend of the spring equinox as we celebrate the launch the Ortega Seed Library with a community seed swap!This new free resource will house a diverse collection of seeds including herbs, veggies, flowers, California natives, and more. Whether you’re a budding gardener or a seasoned grower, there will be something for everyone.We’re excited to share it with you, and to grow together.
